This photo shows projectors we use at a typical HEAVY LOAD. That's the OptiSolar 250's at the back, all 6 of theme, and the rather futuristic in the front are 2 Martin Ego 3 and 2 Martin Ego 5.

Ex DEEP PURPLE singer /bassist GLENN HUGUES is no stranger to the HEAVY LOAD light projectors as the photos testify. I took the live photo at a gig in Cambridge a few years ago during Glenn's «Love and Homecoming Tour». I'm projecting a oil effect with another effect (known as FG7112) projected over the top.

This one I took in March 2005 at London's Mean Fiddler during the «Soul Mover Tour». Incidentally, the Optikinetics Solar 250 projectors of which you can you can see 3 aiming at Glenn were launched in 1973 at this very same venue !

This is one of our favourite image wheels being projected at Heavy Load at the Phoenix on a warm August Night in 2004.All the image wheels that we project have names, this one's called DECADE. if you do try taking pictures of the lights at The Load, be sure to turn your camera flash off, else you'll only see a blank canvas.

There's so much going on this projected image wheel. Quest shows a weird (surreal) mythological world full of odd looking people (Heavy Load is a fitting place to show this really!). In the photo you may be able to make out a tent with the strange freak inhabitants scattered under and around it. We've only shown this once before but will show it again for those who missed it last time.

For those of you that were with us at Bethnal Green's Pleasure Unit, these snaps will sure bring back some memories. The high ceiling helped the « Amazing Brewster» and ourselves create some weird and wonderful lighting displays. We also made regular use of their video projector, showing some rare footage from GRAM PARSONS, MOUNTAIN or HUMBLE PIE & even our crop circle footage ! You can just make out Sir Mick Jagger in one of the photos which would have been from the Rock N'Roll Circus.

That projected pattern that can be seen on the wall on this one is no longer with us as I dropped and smashed it taking it out of the light projector after taking this snap. I've never recovered from the experience as you can imagine !

Here's a backdrop that we sometimes use at the Load to project onto. On the left is GARY BROOKER & on the right ROBIN TROWER from the PROCOL HARUM album cover Boken Barricades. We cheated a bit by projecting their images onto a painted sheet and then drew round the projections. Then we took it out in the garden and slapped some white paint on it. I think you'll agree it looks quite good with some light projections on it.

Incidentally we're using 2 Mathmos projectors in this picture, highly recommended for use in the living room. They retail around £70 each.

I have to first thank Essex boy RICH JAMES FEAVER who's a professional photographer and has been coming to both SIN CITY & HEAVY LOAD for some time now. He kindly brings his camera with him, wich is why I've got two rather nice photos to write about. These were taken at The LOAD during a very busy night in September 2006. We went for a space theme this night. The «Death Star» passing myself (looking rather enthusiastic I must say) is from an original 1970's projection effect «SCIFI 2» made by a company called PLUTO. We're also using «SCIFI 1»(1976) in another part of the club.

This photo, with me deejaying, shows a Optikinetics production called «Space Ritual». This has a lot of planets and other odd spacey goings on moving around the wall. The bright light on the left is actually»SCIFI 2» being projected. This was my favorite lighting theme. We still had other space themed effects that we haven't used at the club so no doubt you will be seing more aliens and spaceships at HEAVY LOAD in the future.

Here's a wonderful photo taken at TAPESTRY GOES WEST music festival, June/July 2006. We, Heavy Loaders, were asked to do a spot of deejaying over this week end so of course, we dragged a few light projectors. The band in the picture (as well as a bit of the audience stage invasion) were the amazing medieval folk rockers CIRCULUS. I specifically took this effect wheel with me called «Fantasy» as the images on it fit in so well with the band stage look & music and on this occasion the crowd look). I'm not sure when this effect wheel was made, I guess late 70's/80's and know nothing about the company that made it, ORION LIGHTING, but it looked good projected onto the white canvas at the back of the stage.

The picture above is of me holding the actual 6 inch effect wheel up to the sky in my garden so you can see all other weid images on there.

November 2010. Okay, its a little bit blurry but if there was ever a photo to sum up the atmosphere of Heavy Load, this has to be it. We always completely switch off the house lights at the Phoenix apart from the bar lights (although we do dim those down quite a bit) and just use our light projections to illuminate the club, giving it a rather unique look month after month. That's Karen during a deejaying break on the right of the photo and Claire on the left, she runs our Facebook page for us (get down from the sofa both of you!).
